Green Hosting
We all have a “carbon footprint” from the carbon dioxide we release when we drive, flick on the light switch, or hop on a plane. The hosting industry alone uses a remarkable amount of energy in powering hardware and datacenter facilities. All of us at Blue Box Group believe in providing incentives for research and development in renewable energy technologies and taking responsibility for the environmental impact created by our business. In a recent EPA report prepared for Congress, it was noted that in 2006, data centers were responsible for 1.5% of National US Energy Consumption and that this usage is rising.
Blue Box has partnered with Seattle City Light’s Green Up Power program, to offset carbon emissions from our office, employee transportation, and data center. The Green Up program allows Blue Box Group to purchase green power for up to 60% of our electricity use and donate funds toward local wind power and other new renewable energy projects in the Northwest. Choosing green power reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, improves air quality and helps reduce the growth of climate-warming emissions. The Green Up program is Green-e Energy certified and fulfills LEED™ Project green power requirements.
Blue Box Group was the first Rails-oriented hosting provider to institute a carbon management policy, and will continue to make every effort to lead this industry as new options become available. As a business, we continue to look for opportunities to reduce our ecological footprint. If you have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
